— One of the myths that surround “negative” emotions is that if we look at them, they become real and they become bigger but if ignore them they eventually go away. As if we can just forget them by denying their existence. That could not be further from the truth. The symptom may temporarily alleviate but the feelings always lurk around waiting to return at the soonest circumstance that will grant them access to return. By facing the emotion, however, we give it a voice and offer it a chance to be known, serve its purpose and be able to safely discharge. In this way, we do not let it fester and grow and do sneaky self-sabotage attacks. Instead, we make room, invite it in and allow it to be known and be reconciled with our psyche. When we stop searching for these missing parts of us because we gave them permission to return to us, we no longer chase the addiction as the addiction itself was just a means of avoidance. We stop the avoidance, the addiction voluntarily relinquishes.
